“A Game of Cat and Witch” is a cute and spicy paranormal shifter romance that gives romantasy vibes as well as paranormal romance vibes. I enjoyed every moment of this book.

We meet Avery, the FMC, as she’s working to bond with a Familiar. The witches in this universe have to have a Familiar in order to have magic and work spells and so far, Avery is a failing witch because she hasn’t been able to locate and bind to any creature. She is desperate and works a forbidden spell to find and bind to a Familiar. In the process, she finds and is bound to a black cat. Not just any black cat, though — he’s a shifter named Felix. And witches and shifters in this world are mortal enemies as well.

This book is a lot of fun to read. It has a lot of lines that are references to TV shows and movies that I love and gave me a little giggle when I recognized them. (For example, the quote below.) I liked both of the main characters and was cheering for them in their struggles as well as giggling and kicking my feet when the banter and flirting between them got started.

“One more day. That was all she had to summon a familiar. Something she had failed to do for the last year. She had tried everything: obscure phases of the moon, following ley lines, fucking getting down on her knees and begging for the grace of the goddess to grant her a rat. She wondered if one would give her special powers. A cheese connoisseur? A world-famous French chef, perhaps? So many possibilities.”

I was slightly afraid going into this book that I would find Felix a little too “gimmicky” as some shifter romance stories feel to me, but I did not get that impression from him at all. I liked him and his cat-like-ness a lot, actually. He and Avery are both cute characters. They both have real struggles and seeing them work together through those struggles and past traumas was very uplifting.

This book has some loose ends as it’s a stand-alone in a series that takes place in the same world. The last notes in the book add that Felix and Avery will return as side characters in the next installment and I am excited to see what else happens in this world with our overall storyline that is taking place beside the couple’s story. It could be read on its own if you wanted to.

Overall, this is a cute and spicy read that I recommend for anyone who loves monster and shifter romance stories. I also think it’s a good read for this time of year, as it felt like it has similar autumn “Halloweentown” kind of vibes in some of the story, similarly to the feeling from “Moth to a Flame.”
