Edie is a 44-year old woman who has just completed her divorce from her rich but emotionally unavailable (and physically unavailable) husband. We meet her in the bar of her hotel after her divorce. This is also where we meet Dorian, a hundreds of years old vampire who looks like he’s in his mid-thirties and could be in a gang. Edie’s best guess is that he is a gangster and dangerous, but it doesn’t stop her from flirting and scolding this man in his own hotel’s bar. Thus begins Edie and Dorian’s paranormal dark romance adventure.

I am not always a big fan of paranormal vampire romances (I just prefer fantasy worlds) but this story was such a fun time. Edie is this strong, mostly self-assured woman who I can easily find myself looking up to as a character. She knows that she does not want a relationship and definitely not a relationship like the marriage she just got out of. To see her completely enrapturing and scolding the big bad vampire Dorian is just a delight to read.

Dorian is incredibly thoughtful to Edie. He learns about some of her emotional triggers and he changes his behavior to be more comfortable to her. He learns about some of her daily struggles as a 44-year-old woman (like hot flashes) and puts his cool hands on the back of her neck. It’s little things like that that make me like Dorian.

The characters have an emotional struggle more than a plot around them from the outside; there are elements of an outside story, but most of the story occurs in their relational and personal development changes. I loved getting to witness the emotional depth and growth of both of the main characters in their struggles and journey. It was realistic while also taking place in a paranormal romance world, and I love getting to read relatable, realistic characters with depth like them. Edie’s emotions were especially raw and relatable.

Even if you are also not a perimenopausal woman in her 40’s (I’m only 32), I recommend this paranormal dark romance story if those types of stories are up your alley. The spice is extremely exciting and the emotions are incredible.
